For a standard 5-inch thick M20 grade slab, you will need approximately 120 to 125 bags of cement. This calculation is based on the M20 ratio of 1:1.5:3 and a shrinkage/wastage factor of 1.54. Using OPC cement is recommended for roof slabs in Nepal for better strength gain. If your slab is thicker than 5 inches, the bag count will increase proportionally.
The M20 ratio is 1 part cement, 1.5 parts sand, and 3 parts aggregate. In the context of 1000 sq. ft. slab in Nepal, this results in approximately 219 cubic feet of sand and 438 cubic feet of aggregate. Using washed river sand and machine-crushed 20mm aggregate ensures the best bond.
While PPC is usable, OPC is generally preferred for slabs due to its faster setting time and higher early strength. In Nepal's climate, OPC allows for faster removal of shuttering and better structural load-bearing in the initial days. However, if using PPC, ensure the curing period is extended by at least 3-4 days.
Excluding labor and steel, the raw materials (cement, sand, aggregate) will cost between NPR 150,000 to 180,000. This estimate varies by district. In Kathmandu, the material costs are generally lower due to supply proximity, while in remote hilly districts, transportation can add up to 30% to the total material cost.
