Building in Hetauda

Hetauda lies in a broad inner-Terai valley between the Mahabharat hills and the Chure range, where the Rapti and Karra rivers run. As the capital of Bagmati Province and the home of Hetauda Industrial District, it is growing steadily — government and business activity bring new homes, offices and commercial buildings across the sub-metropolitan city.

A valley climate

Hetauda is warm to hot for much of the year, humid in the monsoon and mild in winter. That suits open, airy houses: verandas and large windows on the north and east, solid walls on the south and west where Vastu wants weight, and cross-ventilation through each floor. Because hills surround the valley, many plots have a long view in one direction; we open up to it where it falls on the north or east, and screen hot western light where it does not.

Rivers, slopes and soil

Some plots sit near the rivers and their floodplains; others lie on the gentle slopes at the valley's edges. Near the rivers, we check the flood history and set the plinth above it. On slopes, we level the building platform, keep the heavier mass to the south-west and channel run-off around the house. The valley floor is river-laid gravel, sand and silt that change from plot to plot, so a soil test should come before the foundation design. Every building is engineered to the Nepal National Building Code, NBC 105 for earthquake resistance, with a structural engineer on each project.

Vastu planning for Hetauda homes

Plots in Hetauda's newer neighbourhoods are often more regular than in Kathmandu, which makes it easier to get the essentials right from the start:

• Entrance on the north or east, or on an auspicious segment of the road-facing side;
• Kitchen in the south-east, with the cook facing east;
• Puja room in the north-east, light and uncluttered;
• Master bedroom in the south-west, with the staircase and overhead tank nearby;
• Centre of the plan kept open as a hall or courtyard.

Offices and commercial buildings

For offices, shops and small industrial buildings, we plan access, parking, fire safety and daylight first, and arrange the layout to Vastu: the reception and main entrance to the north or east, the owner's or director's cabin in the south-west facing north or east, and storage to the south and west.
