Designing for Janakpur: heat, water and family life

Janakpurdham is one of the oldest religious cities of the Terai and the capital of Madhesh Province. Families here often build for several generations under one roof, host large gatherings for festivals and weddings, and want a home that respects the traditions of Mithila while staying cool through a long, hot summer. Those three demands — the household, the faith and the climate — shape every house we design for Janakpur.

Keeping a house cool without fighting Vastu

Summer afternoons in Dhanusha regularly pass 40°C, and most of that heat arrives on the west and south-west walls. Vastu already asks for the heaviest, most solid part of the house in the south-west — the master bedroom, the staircase, stores and the overhead water tank. On the Terai that mass doubles as a heat shield. We keep openings on the west small and shaded, put the large windows on the north and east where the light is soft, and use deep chhajjas (sunshades), cross-ventilation and a ventilated roof so the upper floors do not turn into ovens.

The aangan and the Brahmasthan

Many Mithila homes are built around an aangan, an open courtyard where daily life, ritual and the tulsi plant sit together. Vastu calls the centre of the plan the Brahmasthan and asks that it stay open and uncluttered. On larger plots we keep a true open-to-sky courtyard; on tighter city plots, a double-height hall or a skylight over the centre gives the same light and air while keeping the floor area usable.

Puja room, kitchen and guests

  • Puja room in the north-east, on the ground floor where possible, with space for the family gatherings that Chhath and Vivah Panchami bring.
  • Kitchen in the south-east with the cook facing east, plus a semi-open cooking area for festival cooking where the plot allows.
  • Guest rooms in the north-west, which suits visiting relatives well.

Water, ground and safety

Janakpur is a city of ponds on flat, low-lying land, and heavy monsoon rain can leave streets and plots waterlogged. We set the plinth comfortably above the highest water level the site has seen, design drainage that carries water away from the foundations, and damp-proof the walls properly. Vastu's preference for land that falls toward the north and east fits neatly with grading the site for drainage.

The water table is often high and Terai soils can be loose and sandy, so we recommend a soil test before the foundation is designed. Every building is engineered to the Nepal National Building Code (NBC 105 for earthquake design) — the whole country, the Terai included, is seismically active.

Homes, shops and mixed-use buildings

Along Janakpur's main roads, many owners build a shop or showroom on the ground floor with the family living above. We plan the commercial frontage and the family entrance separately, place the cash counter and owner's seat in the south-west facing north or east, and keep the Vastu of the residential floors intact above the shop.

Permits and costs

We prepare the drawings for the Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City building permit as part of the design, with setbacks and height worked out for your road width. For construction rates, see our house construction cost guide and the Dhanusha construction cost page.
